Hunt aiming to turn fab four into famous five

Toby Hunt will attempt to join an elite band at Mendip Spring Golf Club next week by recording back-to-back wins in the Marstons PGA West Region Championship.

Previous winners of the tournament, which celebrates its hundredth anniversary this year, include Peter Alliss, Bernard Hunt, Gordon Brand Jnr and Phillip Price.

Just four players, however, have made a successful defence of the title.

“That would be a good list to be on,” said Hunt, who added his name to the tournament’s roll of honour at The Players Club, Bristol, by finishing three shots clear of the field.

In contrast to his preparations for last year’s event, Hunt is lacking competitive experience due to the lockdown and subsequent truncated tournament programme.

“I’ve played two Jamega Tour events and that’s been about it,” said the 27-year-old who is attached to St Mellons Golf Club, Cardiff.

“So I’m not as consistent as I would normally be at this time of year.”

However, finishing tied-second in the most recent Jamega Tour event at Oxford Golf Club has given Hunt a timely confidence boost.

“It was a strong field that included some Challenge Tour players, so it’s a good standard and coming tied-second was good for my confidence,” he added.

The tournament, which boasts a £12,000 prize fund, also features separate competitions for Ladies, Seniors and PGA Assistants and all three winners from 2019 will be defending their titles.

Katie Rule, who will be playing at her home club, will attempt to retain the Ladies crown, Jon Bevan the Seniors, and Jacob Hunter, who finished tied-second three shots adrift of Hunt, the Assistants.
