A stiff wind at the cliff-top Langland Bay course overlooking the Gower Peninsular caused havoc for professionals and amateurs alike in the annual Gwalia Housing Trust pro-am.

As a result scores were unusually high as Welsh trio Toby Hunt (St Mellons), Richard Dinsdale (Asbri Golf) and Brian Lee (Parc /Asbri Golf) shared top spot on one over-par rounds of 71.

All returned with tales of woe. Hunt was one under after a birdie at the 15th, but followed with a bogey and double bogey. Dinsdale dropped a shot at the opening hole and made seven at the par four ninth. But two birdies at the 15th and 18th revived his day.

Lee looked an improbable winner after a series of mishaps going out. Four bogeys followed by a double at the eighth would have demoralised some players. But he rallied with a remarkable turnaround with birdies at the tenth, 13th, 15th and 18th for a four-under back nine of 30.

Club duties mean he seldom plays these days but he has a good record at Langland Bay and was the joint winner two years ago.

Promising Neath assistant Craig Melding (Neath) and Richard Brookman (Creigiau) avoided major disasters to card 72 and share fourth.

Bristol & Clifton assistant Nicholas Ramshaw earned his biggest cheque by taking sixth on 73 with Ashley Mansell (Clevedon) and Michael Watson (Wessex Golf Centre) claiming the following two places.

Lee completed a double by heading the winning team of Ian Walker, Simon Langford and Chris Kiley on 131.  Matthew Owen (Brynhill) led Ron McClean, Gary Mitchell and Rob Ladd into second place five shots behind.  Melding piloted David Lord, Clyde Mitchell and Jason Griffiths into third on the same score.
