Hutcheon - A moment I'll treasure forever

Sinking the winning putt to secure a famous victory over America in the 28th PGA Cup will go down as one of the best moments of Greig Hutcheon’s career.

With Great Britain & Ireland looking in a healthy position on the final day at Foxhills Club & Resort, it soon became clear that the Scotsman could clinch back-to-back wins for the hosts on the 17th green.

A large crowd gathered to witness history and Hutcheon held his nerve, executing a delicate chip and sinking a four-foot putt to make sure Great Britain & Ireland’s name was on the trophy again.

“To be in that position where you were guaranteeing the victory was sensational and very exciting,” said Hutcheon. “I will treasure it forever.

“It was very emotional but also it was a release of tension for me because it means so much to you. You’re trying your guts out but it was fantastic.”

Earlier wins for Damien McGrane, Rob Coles and Matt Cort had put Great Britain & Ireland in an excellent position on singles Sunday.

And once Chris Currie had come from three down to tie against Rod Perry and secure a draw, it was down to Hutcheon to secure the win for Albert MacKenzie’s side.

“I had absolutely no idea that putt was for the win and it’s best it stayed that way,” Hutcheon added.

“My caddie knew the situation and I didn’t which was good, because I don’t think I really could have coped with that on top of struggling along with the way I was playing.

“I knew my game wasn’t just quite right but in the closing stretches I’ve managed to find a couple of great golf shots. A little chip and a putt at the end on 17 managed to guarantee half a point which was fantastic.

“I kind of knew with the crowd that had gathered around 17, but I just figured I was playing match seven and the guys were doing reasonably well, I just figured it was a gathering or people to support me.

“People talk about the process and it really held true because I was just concentrating entirely on walking around the putt, looking at it from both sides.

“Hopefully they won’t show the putt itself in close up HD because it was far from convincing but the ball dropped and what more could I ask for.”
