Jakes Joy At Shirehampton

Stockwood Vale’s James Jakes won a Gloucester and Somerset PGA medal for the first time this season with a two-under-par 65 at Shirehampton.

He finished with a crucial birdie to avoid joining Giuseppe Licata (Filton), Ross Langdon (Brickhampton Court) and National Assistants Champion Lee Corfield (Burnham and Berrow) who shared second one stroke behind.

Early starter Jakes made birdies at the third, sixth and 10th holes but his card was spoilt by a double bogey at the 17th.

Corfield dropped two early shots but added four birdies. Licata’s four birdies were sandwiched by bogeys at either end the course.

Langdon opened with nine pars, then picked up strokes at the 10th, 12th and 16th before two further bogeys. Andrew March (Brean) finished fifth on 68 .

Ed Goodwin (Cirencester) remains the Total Triumph Order of Merit leader although Licata made up ground with four events left.
