West No 1 Ashley Mansell claimed his first win of the year in testing wet and windy conditions in the Gloucester and Somerset PGA medal at Minehead and West Somerset.

The Clevedon assistant carded 40 points as the Stableford system was used again to speed up play. He landed five birdies and finished one point clear of Luke Collins (Tall Pines).

Mansell's round came alive from the seventh when he made his second birdie and he added more at the eighth, tenth and 11th before returning in par figures for his second success of the winter season.

Collins, like Mansell, dropped his only stroke on the third. He added birdies at the fifth, seventh, eighth and 11th.

Somerset county amateur Curtis Edwards from Taunton celebrated his birthday with third place on 38.

Unattached Bristol pro Martin Dewhurst was fourth one shot behind. Ed Goodwin (Cirencester) returned 34 to take the Over 40s award.
