Marathon man Jason ends up in hospital

Jason Dransfield endured 10 rounds of golf in a day, in blistering heat for much of the time, to raise money for local charities.

But the 35-year-old Heswall assistant was so exhausted at the end of his marathon, which he completed on foot, he ended up being taken by ambulance to one of the hospitals he was supporting!

“After finishing the final round I felt fine although a bit sore but five minutes after getting into the clubhouse I was struggling to walk and could not even string a couple of sentences together,” he recalled. “I was put on a drip then went home the next day.”

Dransfield, the PGA North assistant of the year, plodded a staggering 50 miles, which equated to 108,000 steps during the day.

                “I burnt off 10,000 calories, went through four pairs of shoes and changed my clothing five times just to try to keep myself fresh,” he said.

He took up the challenge three years after his mum Hilary went into remission, having being diagnosed with breast cancer on his 33rd birthday.

“It gave me a bit of a shock when I was told she had only a few months to live but now she’s doing well I decided to give something back to those who helped her.

“A lot of people have played five rounds in a day but I thought I’d extend it to 10 and not many have achieved that.

“I teed off at 2.45am and the first 12 holes were played in pitch black but I had my dad Phil caddying and shining a torch on the fairway along with Stuart McCall, the head greenkeeper at Chester, also trying to keep an eye on the ball.

 He had to go to work but came back later and I also had a lot of support from friends, particularly those at the golf club who were fantastic.  It was non-stop play and we did not finish until after 10pm.  It was also the hottest June day for 41 years but I didn’t notice it because I was keen to keep on going!

”Incredibly I struck the ball better in the last round than all the previous ones. Altogether I had 35 birdies and an eagle and was six-under-par in total.”

So far Dransfield has raised almost £6,000 for Maggies support centre at Clatterbridge Hospital, Claire House, St John’s Hospice  and Clatterbridge Cancer Charity.
