Rhys Enoch was given a hero’s welcome when he returned to Truro Golf Club for the club’s annual pro-am following his success in this year’s Open at Carnoustie.

And he delighted members and friends by taking first place with a round of two-under-par 65 on a difficult day for scoring.

The Celtic Manor-attached Challenge Tour player continued in the way he played when he completed all four rounds in Scotland to claim a share of 67th place.

Although he dropped two shots over the opening five holes, he drew level two holes later and added three further birdies on the way home.

His clubhouse lead was challenged by Kevin Harper (East Devon) who started with ten pars before he collected his first birdie. Further birdies on 12 and 14 were both followed by bogeys so he fell one shot short.

Newquay’s Chris Gill claimed third on level par with four birdies. Craig Melding (Neath) also managed four and shared fourth with Paul Fiddes (Cricket St Thomas) on  68

Part-time player Tony Nash (Portpean), once the star of Cornwall golf and a PGA Cup player who teed up in three Opens, was a shot further back in sixth

He shared this position with Richard Woods (Dainton Park), Adam Curtis (Bude)  and Anthony Buchanan (Tavistock) who landed the day’s only eagle at the par four 13th.

William Nolan Farley (Bovey Castle) led the Fire Safety Cornwall winning team of Jeff Hick, David Hick and Mark Wilson on 16-under-par 118         .

Enoch led Humbert’s side Kat Stopford, Andy Stopford and Mark Stevenson into second on 121 with Eugenie Knight (Carlyon Bay) and her trio of Tim Searle, Jason Searle and Mike Gregory third on countback.

Harper’s team of Paul Carlton, Graham Cowls and John Harris also finished on the same mark in fourth.
