Recognition For A PGA Volunteer

Alan Parker of Barton-on-Sea could be excused for putting his feet up and relaxing at the ripe old age of 86. Instead he is ready, willing and able to help The PGA in Hampshire as they prepare for a new season, just as he has done the past 20 or so years.

Alan is one of band of volunteers who work alongside County PGA Secretary Roger Tuddenham to make sure the tournament schedule operates like clockwork. He is happy to help and offer an encouraging word or two to the participants be they young or old, and wish them well.

Now his charming personality, enduring enthusiasm and unswerving commitment to the cause has been recognised by his peers. Alan was presented with the Tom King Trophy for his outstanding contribution to The PGA in Hampshire at their Annual Dinner.

Roger said it was a pleasure to be in Alan's company on the circuit and recalled the miles and hours they had to put in as the season unfolded. He said: "I would sometimes pick Alan up from his house at four in the morning to catch the ferry to the Isle of Wight for a tournament. However early the time, he would be bright and breezy!

“Then when we caught the late boat back I would be tired and grumpy but Alan would still be bright and breezy. He is a remarkable man.”

Alan, who has been a member of Brokenhurst Manor for 50 years, said: “I am shocked, stunned and totally surprised and privileged to have my name on this trophy. There are some great names on it.”
