Reid all about it

Corhampton’s Adam Reid used his local knowledge to shoot eight-under par 134 (66, 68) and chalk up his maiden victory in the paid ranks, but he needed to hold his nerve to do so, writes Ken Gaunt.

The PGA Assistant Professional was level with playing partner Lee-on-the-Solent’s Russell Tate after 34 holes. But any fears that first year pro Reid, 24, might implode soon disappeared as he finished with successive birdies.

That dramatic finish gave him a two-shot victory over Tate in the PGA in Hampshire Masters, sponsored by Be Wiser Insurance.

Reid, tied first in the morning with Southwood’s Chris Hudson on 66, has a history of good scores on a course where he played as a boy, with 64 a personal best.

Naturally he was delighted to finish ahead of a strong and much more experienced field and pick up £707 in prize money.

He said: “It is brilliant to get the first win under my belt. The course was playing well and I thought if I could make two-under in the first round, that would keep me in contention.

“So it was a bit of bonus to finish five-under. Then I flew out the blocks in the afternoon with birdies at the first and second. I missed a short putt on three for another birdie, which was disappointing.

“It was good playing alongside Russell. I knew we were fighting it out for top spot, so it became a bit like match play. I was thrilled to finish like I did.”

Tate edged out Swanmore’s Martin Adams by one shot while Hudson and 2016 winner Kevin Saunders of Brokenhurst Manor finished tied fourth.
