Russell takes Hertfordshire prize

Ray Russell

Ray Russell (Centurion Club) hit top form as he surged to a two-shot success in The Hertfordshire Golf & Country Club Pro-Am.

The Scottish ace made six birdies in his four-under round of 66 to beat Sam Teer (Clacton), Glen Portelli (Old Fold Manor) and Rob Watson (The Shire).

Former European Tour winner Russell teed off at the ninth hole under a shotgun start. He was level par after eight holes but his round burst into life with five birdies in seven holes.

Indeed he picked up shots on three successive holes from the first before a rare blip at the fourth was immediately cancelled out by a gain at the next.

The scoring spree helped Russell land his first top prize of the 2018 season.

His nearest challenger for a long while was Watson who twice got it to three-under. But a dropped stroke with four holes to go meant that he had to settle for a share of second alongside Portelli and Teer.

David Salisbury (David Salisbury Golf) was in charge of the winning team who recorded a tally of 119 - three better than Watson's quartet.
