Sarah Sails Through Q School Test

Sarah Attwood (Bury St Edmunds) ran out a comfortable winner of the region’s Qualifying School after two polished days’ work at Essendon Country Club.

The first-year trainee shot rounds of 73 and 68 to close out at three-under-par – five shots clear of three players who finished tied for second spot.

Attwood was slightly frustrated by how she completed her opening round but went through the gears on day two, firing six birdies.

Indeed she made a trio of two’s on all the short holes on the front nine of the Old Course at Essendon.

She also made birdies on each of the three par-fives on the inward nine.

Attwood, 32, said: “The first day I was basically focusing on playing some good and could have gone better than I finished off with.

“But the second day I just sunk more putts. I holed a lot more longer putts and kept my nerve.

“I’ve never shot a 68 – four-under – in a proper tournament before, so it was something special for me.”

Attwood has played on the LET Access Series and reached the final stage of the Ladies European Tour Qualifying School in Morocco.

She also made the cut after being handed an invite for the European Masters at the Buckinghamshire in 2015.

But now the Cambridgeshire golfer is combining playing commitments with her pursuit of a PGA Foundation Degree.

Attwood added: “I knew that at some point I wanted to do the PGA degree course – it was just when. And last year seemed a good moment to start.”

As well as completing her first-year studies over the coming months, she can now also look forward to competing against the region’s top professionals in the Order of Merit.

If Sarah shows similar form to her two rounds at Essendon then she is sure to more than hold her own.
