Team bond is so strong

Chris McDonnell says the team spirit among the Great Britain and Ireland players is so strong that they’ll be happy whoever they’re partnered with.

GB and I skipper Albert MacKenzie, along with his two vice-captains Martyn Thompson and Cameron Clark, is using the practice days at Foxhills Club and Resort to try out a few different four-ball and foursomes combinations.

McDonnell revealed: “We had the discussion the other night…it’s a case of if everybody’s name was in the hat we’d all be happy to play with each other.

“The team bonding is that strong. Anybody could play with anybody. But of course some individuals’ games are going to suit others, so we’re testing out a few partnerships.”

McDonnell, 35, is thrilled to be involved in the 28th renewal of the PGA Cup after just missing out on the 2015 team in Cordevalle.

And the Golf of Goodwood academy manager has made it clear about what an honour it is to represent GB and I.

He said: “This is the closest we’ll come to a Ryder Cup. Being a PGA professional, this is our pinnacle. There’s thousands of PGA professionals out there and they would love this opportunity.

“Last week I was playing with (team-mate) Andy Raitt in a South region event and we were just talking about the PGA Cup the whole way round.

“To finally get here after missing so narrowly last time it means a lot. We’ve all earned our right to be here – so we’ve got to enjoy it and let it flow.”
