Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club and Wales Golf have linked up with the Stroke Association to encourage the local community who have survived a stroke to try golf or return to the game they love.

As part of this year’s New2Golf campaign, Wales Golf have partnered with the charity to highlight the accessibility of golf and demonstrate the benefits of golf for those who have survived a stroke.

Pyle & Kenfig was one of only ten facilities across Wales to roll out the scheme last year, all offering free or low cost beginner group lessons, specifically tailored to stroke survivors.

Pyle & Kenfig, led by disability inclusive trained PGA Director of Golf Dylan Williams and fellow PGA Professional Matt Wootton, have worked closely with Bridgend Stroke Association delivering NEW 2 GOLF Taster Sessions, followed by a ten-week course of lessons which was attended by more than 16 stroke victims.

One participant in the trial scheme was Dave Abbott, a former member who suffered a stroke in 2016.

“To see him back at the club, taking part, playing our 9-hole short course and enjoying the golf practice and social afterwards with his golfing friends was great,” said Williams.

Another member of the group Bev Yardley commented: “I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to give golf a try. The facilities at the club are great for people with disabilities, so there was no concern about getting about.

“I was provided with a really safe environment which gave me confidence to try and now look forward to the sessions each week. I would encourage anyone who is a stroke survivor to take advantage of the scheme.”

Wootton, the club’s experienced PGA Professional, said: “The sheer determination that this group has shown, has made this one of the most enjoyable projects that I have been involved with.”

Williams added: “Eight have signed up for lessons and four have joined the club as members. We shall continue the programme into the new year and welcome more people who have suffered from a stroke.”
