Tranter Gets His Mojo Back Ahead Of Farleigh Final

Tranter will play in the PGA Assistants' Championship Final looking for an improvement on last year’s event when he missed the cut at Coxmoor Golf Club in Nottinghamshire.

Now he is back and will tee off in the £32,000 Birdietime-supported final which will be played at Farleigh Golf Club in Surrey between July 3-5.

And for the 24-year-old, his association with the Shropshire club goes way back to the 1990s.

“I was a junior member at Lilleshall Hall before this, I started having lessons here when I was three years old! My dad’s always been a good golfer so he took me up there to practice from an early age,” recalled Tranter.

“When you’re younger, everybody wants to be a Rory McIlroy and the reality is that not everyone makes it, I took the PGA course as a back up which gives you the ability to coach while playing golf to a good standard.”

Tranter hopes that his work with new coach - Shrewsbury-based Hawkstone Park Golf Club professional Mike Welch - will pay off.

Welch was the lead coach at the Lee Westwood Golf School and Tranter has been working with him for a year.

“I had a couple of lessons with Mike towards the end of last year and I got my first win which was the Midlands Assistants’ Championship at Walsall Golf Club,” said Newport-based Tranter.

“There was a change straight away and I got my buzz back again. I got stuck in my ways a bit, and a new coach can give you a kick up the backside again. It was a bit of a learning curve and I’m a bit more balanced.

“The course at Coventry Golf Club, where the qualifying event was, suits me, but the venue for last year’s final probably didn’t and I just missed the cut.

“If the final was at Coventry like it used to be, it’d be good for me but I’m too late for that.

“I don’t know much about the course at Farleigh, it’s new to me, but I’ll be having a practice there the day before. I’m going there with a friend of mine and another Shropshire lad who’s qualified, Jamie Brittain of Horsehay Village. It’s good that two of us from the county are in the final.”

Other Assistants from the Midlands due to play at Farleigh include: Ian Martin (Kings Norton Golf Club); William Painter (Morley Hayes); Hayden Berridge (Erewash Valley Golf Club);   Luke Aston (Beau Desert); Matthew Jacques (South Staffs); Connor Ashby (Beeston Fields) and Harrison Long (Moor Hall)
