Young savours the links effect as he wins Aberdeen Golf Links Pro-Am

03/05/2022

Daniel Young produced the kind of finish that grandstands were invented for as he edged to victory in the Aberdeen Golf Links Pro-Am.

In this wonderful celebration of links courses in and around the Granite City, Young made a late burst for the line at Trump International and claimed the ultimate honours by a single shot from defending champion Tom Higson.

The 30-year-old from Perth, a winner on the PGA EuroPro Tour on Scottish soil back in 2019, claimed another notable conquest with a brace of birdies at 17 and 18 in a rousing seven-under 65.

In what had developed into a two-horse race for the title, that final flourish was good enough for Young to pip Higson with an 18-under tally over three days which also included circuits of Royal Aberdeen and Cruden Bay.

Young, a regular winner on the US college circuit in a successful amateur career which was burnished by victory in the South African Amateur Championship, bolstered his push for glory with early gains on the first and third during the final round.

He leaked a shot on the sixth but swiftly repaired the damage with another birdie on the seventh before a charging, five-under back-nine of 31 swept him to the win and the £4,000 top prize.

Higson put in a stout defence of his title and his six-under 65 at Royal Aberdeen set the clubhouse target on 17-under before Young nipped in to steal it.

Jamie McLeary, the former European Tour player, was third on 11-under while Aberdeen great, Paul Lawrie, shared fourth on 10-under with Paul Shields and James Ruth.
