Rob Coles (Maylands Golf &Country Club) finished with a flourish to grab a narrow halfway lead at the London Open.
Coles, who was a regular on the European Tour for many years, showed his class by making three birdies in his final six holes at West Essex.
The last stroke he picked up came at the 18th and ensured he signed for a two-under-par 68.
It was just the sort of polished performance that helped Coles finish top of the East region Order of Merit in 2016.
He made a total of five birdies to help him edge one clear of Steve Cipa (South Essex Golf Centre), Ray Russell (Centurion Club) and James Webber (Three Rivers Golf &Country Club).
Another former European Tour player Andrew Marshall (Bawburgh) is making his first appearance in an East region Order of Merit tournament. He opened up with a one-over-par 71 to tie for eighth place.
Defending champion and former BMW PGA winner Simon Khan opened up with a two-over 72 to lie in a share of 14th
