Chris Baron (West Essex) shot a three-under-par 69 to grab the halfway lead at the KJW Millbrook Masters (incorporating the East Anglian Open).
Baron shrugged off a bogey at the opening hole with three birdies before the turn at The Millbrook. He also made a further gain at the 11th before dropping a shot two holes later.
But he returned to three-under-par with a birdie at the long 15th and then closed out a good day’s work at the Bedfordshire course with three straight pars.
It proved sufficient to give him a one-shot lead from last year’s overall Order of Merit winner Jason Levermore (Little Channels Golf Centre).
Levermore made 16 pars and two birdies – one on each nine – as he laid the foundations for a bold bid for success on day two.
Also right in contention are Phil Abbott (Whipsnade Park), Darren Charlton (Dunstable Downs) and Rob Coles (Maylands Golf & Country Club).
Coles picked up shots at both the 15th and the last to move to within striking distance.
The race to top the 2019 Order of Merit looks set to go right to the wire at The Millbrook.
Entering the final event, James Watts (Kingsway Golf Centre) held a narrow 16-point lead from James Ruebotham (Welwyn Garden City), while Levermore sat a further 10 points adrift. Mark Talbott (Thorpe Hall) lay in fourth spot, with the top-three guaranteed a place at the PGA Play-Offs in Turkey next month.
With a day to go, Levermore will fancy his chances of defending his Order of Merit crown, but Watts, Ruebotham and Talbott are also all in good shape, tied for seventh place at one-over.
The second-round leaders are last out at 11am.
