Ian Walley’s 15-year quest to win the Derbyshire Professional Championship finally ended at Chesterfield Golf Club but even that proved an appropriately prolonged affair.
Having finished level on seven-under with James Whatley after rounds of 67 and 68, the Kedleston Park PGA professional became embroiled in a ding dong battle with his rival from the East Midlands Golf Academy before claiming victory.
Five sudden death play-off holes saw both men squander chances to win before, in fading light, Walley sank a 15 foot putt at the sixth – the par four 10th – to settle the issue.
In addition to realising a longstanding ambition, Walley also ended defending champion Jack Lynch’s bid for a hat-trick of victories.
However, Lynch, who partnered Lee Clarke to victory in the recent Golfbreaks.com PGA Fourball Champioinship at Carden Park, gained some consolation by winning the Assistants’ event for the third straight year.
