The names of Richard Kemp (Corby), John Freeman (Kingsthorpe), Stuart Murray (Northants County) and Alf Lovelady (Northampton) may not mean much to some of the current county amateur and professional golfers but they organised the first pro-am event in the county in 1968. It was played at Northants County, consisted of nine teams of three and cost 27 shillings to enter.
It was 20 years later before The PGA in Northamptonshire became one of the first counties to be constitutionally set up. Tim Giles (Kingsthorpe) was the driving force behind this, with the late Stuart Brown (Northants County) who became the first official chairman, George Mobbs (Northants County) became secretary and Brian Mudge (then Staverton Park) became the first captain.
Les Cantrell's (Venture Business Forms) sponsorship was the start of the nationally renowned winter pro-ams series which continued for ten years. During this time his sponsorship amounted to over £50,000. He now sponsors the prestigious Cantrell Cup played for annually by the county’s professionals and leading amateurs.
The PGA in Northamptonshire plays such a pivotal role providing playing opportunities for its members and also equipping its members with initiatives to enhance their skills as coaches. It also provides the necessary coaches to mentor County teams alongside the Northamptonshire County Golf Partnership initiatives to grow the game of golf.
It also affords a number of commercial opportunities through an attractive tournament pro-am schedule, enabling local companies to combine business with their passion for golf with access to a wide and varied selection of courses and can be the perfect complement to local business looking for something different for its clients.
For its members, popular fixtures on the calendar are the 36-hole Strokeplay Championship, Matchplay Championship and the Cantrell Cup.
