Simon Lilly’s achievement in being the only player to beat par not once but twice in The PGA in Northamptonshire Strokeplay Championship left the rest of the field playing for second place.
The Staverton Park pro opened up at Northants County with a two-under par round of 69 and then went one better to post a five-under par total of 137 for the 36 holes.
That left him five strokes clear of Collingtree Park’s Rob Clayton whose level par return for the two rounds earned him the Best Trainee’s Award and finish a stroke clear of Northampton Golf Club’s Nick Soto and Mark McGeehan of Cherwell Edge.
McGeehan, however, gained some consolation by winning the Afternoon Pro-Am with his amateur partner Robbie Wilson.
The pair posted an eight-under par round of 62 to finish a stroke clear of Kettering Golf Club’s Michael Campbell and his partner Shaun Balch, one of the event’s sponsors.
In addition to Thompson Balch, Phil Rosier of Caddy Cars, Selwyn and David Lloyd of I D Lloyd and Sons and Tom Pearson of Nene Warehouse & Office Solutions sponsored the day.
