England (Midlands) Region

A blistering three-hole blast put Ben Hall on course to win the region’s first event of the new season – the PGA Midlands Trainees Strokeplay at Wishaw Golf Club.
Hall, a PGA Assistant at Rushcliffe Golf Club, Nottinghamshire, was one of four players with an excellent chance of claiming the £200 first prize after the first round.
His two-under-par round of 68 put him a shot clear of Horsley Lodge’s Alexander Smart, level with Llanymynech’s Tom Farquharson and one adrift of Copt Heath’s Michael Bayliss.
But while Smart and Farquharson faltered on the second circuit, both posting one-over-par rounds of 71, Hall and Bayliss turned the event into a two-cornered contest.
Bayliss began the second round with a bogey that trimmed his lead to one before trading eagles with Hall at the par five fourth to maintain his advantage.
However, a bogey at the next coupled with successive birdies from Hall saw the latter claim pole position and, despite a birdie, par, birdie, finish from Bayliss, hold on to win by a shot with a six-under-par total of 134.
