Northamptonshire’s Simon Lilly left an international field trailing in his wake in becoming the first individual winner of the Bermuda 3s World Team Championship presented by Goslings.

In doing so, Lilly (pictured right with his family), who represents De Vere Staverton Estate, set a course record at the famous par-3 Turtle Hill Golf Club at the Fairmont Southampton en route to claiming the $11,000 first prize.

His bogey-free seven-under-par 47 meant he completed the four rounds of the tournament in five-under to finish 12-shots clear of second placed Cary Sciorra from Medalist Golf Club, Washington D.C.

Commenting on his record-breaking round, Lilly said: “I just went out and tried to score as low as possible and got off to a nice start and just kept it going.

“We had a bit of rain and a couple of really heavy downpours. There was also a little bit of breeze but nothing major. It was just one of those good days.”

BERMUDA 3s presented by Goslings, is the creation of two golf industry veterans, Joe Steranka, former CEO of the PGA of America, and Honda Classic executive director, Ken Kennerly.

Sponsored by the Bermuda Tourism Authority and Goslings Rum, PGA Professionals from the USA, Great Britain & Ireland, Bermuda and Spain competed individually for a prize fund of $52,000.

“We could not have asked for a better start to this new world pro-am,” said Steranka.

“From Mid Ocean, Port Royal, Turtle Hill and the Fairmont Southampton all being amazing hosts, to the quality of play from our participants, it has truly been a world-class event.”
