John Bandurak got his tournament campaign off to the perfect start by winning the PGA Midlands Q School #1 at The Belfry thanks to a back nine birdie bonanza.
The PGA Professional from Bloxwich Golf Club negotiated the PGA National course at the four-time Ryder Cup venue in three-under-par to head the 35-strong field by a shot.
There was no sign that would be the outcome when he reached the turn, however.
He was two-over-par at that stage but an eagle at the par five 10th proved a portent of the high-octane golf that followed.
A birdie at the par-five 12th was cancelled out by a bogey two holes later before he signed off with three successive birdies to repel Danny Greenwood’s challenge.
Greenwood, who represents Forest Pines and won the PGA Professional Championship in 2013, also moved into overdrive after reaching the turn in one-over.
Successive birdies at 13, 14 and 15 had him scenting victory but Bandurak’s late flourish proved decisive.
Bandurak and Greenwood, who posted rounds of 68 and 69 respectively, and Perton Park Golf Club’s Adam White, who finished third on one-under, were the only players to break par.
