Brabazon Seriers Winners

Leicestershire duo Michael Reed and Dan Bacon maintained the form that had seen them win the Brabazon Series after five of its six scheduled tournaments with another top three finish in the final event at The Belfry.

Reed (right), a PGA Professional at Glen Gorse Golf Club, and Bacon, a member at nearby Birstall, went into the final leg of the series with an unassailable lead after finishing no lower than tied eighth in the five previous events.

That record included two victories, the second of which confirmed them as winners of the series prize: a night’s accommodation at The Belfry, with breakfast and a complimentary fourball on the resort’s world-famous Brabazon course.

Reed also earned £1,610 in prize money while Bacon did not end the series empty-handed.

The four-handicapper claimed a bottle of gin courtesy of associate sponsors Sibling Gin as a result of winning the nearest the pin competition for amateurs on the par three seventh hole.

It was the second time Bacon (right) has won the nearest the pin competition on that hole in the series and the shot played its part in the pair amassing 42 Stableford points in the final BetterBall format competition.

That saw them finish tied third, five points adrift of tournament winners Richard Mansell (below right) and Luke Donnelly (below left), PGA pros at Beau Desert Golf Club, Staffordshire, and Mount Juliet Golf Club, Co Kilkenny, Ireland, respectively.

All were presented with their prizes by Stuart Harris, managing director of Smarter Golf Energy, PGA Official Suppliers and sponsors of the nearest the pin prize on the iconic 10th hole on the four-time Ryder Cup stage.

Reed and Bacon are friends of longstanding and commenting on their success, the former said: “Dan plays at Birstall, the club I grew up at so we’ve known each other for 15 to 20 years. We played really steady and gelled well. If one of us had a bad hole, the other stepped in.”

Bacon, meanwhile, is no stranger to The Belfry. “My lad has lessons here and I’ve had a couple with one of the pros, Phil Akers, so I’m here all the time,” he explained.
