Three's company

Order of Merit champion Matthew Cort recorded his first PGA Midlands victory of the season in the Rotary Charity Pro-Am at Copt Heath but was not alone in the metaphorical winner’s enclosure.

In what was a case of three’s company, the pro from Beedles Lake Golf Club, Leicestershire, was joined there by Whittngton Heath’s Daniel Whitby-Smith and Simon Lilly of De Vere Staverton Estate.

All three posted level-par scores of 71 to earn an equal share of the £1,300 first prize after Lilly led the way at the turn on two-under.

Aston Wood Golf Club’s Chris Evans was the only other member of the field to be under-par following the front nine on the Solihull course.

He was one-under thanks to an eagle at the par-five seventh that was bookended by birdies but was unable to maintain momentum on the back nine.

As a result he finished two shots adrift of the trio in first place, sharing fourth place with Oakmere Park Golf Club’s Andy Willey and Luke Towler of Telford Golf and Country Club.
