Hayden Berridge and Harrison Quirk each had a hand on the trophy after finishing level in the Midland Assistants’ Professional Championship at Walsall Golf Club.
Both players completed the 36-holes in level par and, under normal circumstances, a sudden death play-off would have followed to determine the winner.
However, given the monsoon-like deluge that inundated the course during the latter part of the second round, the circumstances were anything but normal.
Flooded greens meant a play-off was impossible and the two players each earned £200 – the prize money allocated for first and second places – and will have their names engraved on the trophy’s plinth.
Earlier, Drayton Park Golf Club’s Quirk (above) and Rory Kirwan of Kenilworth Golf Club, who finished third a shot behind the joint-winners, set the pace in the first round.
They posted one-under-par rounds of 69 to be two shots clear of their closest pursuers, Matthew Lea Golf Academy’s Jamie Brittain and Scott Witton of Enville Golf Club.
Berridge (above), who is attached to Erewash Valley Golf Club, was three shots adrift but responded with a two-under-par round of 68 that, with Quirk following up with a round of one-over, bridged the gap.
Meanwhile, despite slipping out of contention in the second round and finishing sixth, Brittain completed a rare double of winning the region’s two Order of Merits – the Assistants and the one open to all PGA Professionals based in the Midlands.
Leading scores: H Quirk (Drayton Park), H Berridge (Erewash Valley) 140 (E); R Kirwan (Kenilworth Golf Club) 141 (+1); S Williams (Cold Ashby) 142 (+2); T Harrison (Horsley Lodge) 143 (+3).
