On one of the warmest days of the year to date, four of The PGA’s southern stars each shot two-under-par 70 to split one of the largest prize funds at the Burhill Pro-Am, proudly supported by Silver Key Developments.
So instead of a single winner taking the much talked about £10,000 top prize, Chris Gane (Left Handed Golf at Silvermere), Richard Wallis (Canterbury), Guy Woodman (ProAgenda.com) and David Callaway (Wyke Green) each walked away, albeit with a still handsome £3,562 each.
Gane, who went on to win the Nearest The Pin event as well, commented: “Well done to Burhill and The PGA for making this day happen as it’s easily one of the best events of the schedule. The weather and course were both magnificent, and a massive thanks to Silver Key Developments for my biggest pay day for quite some time!”
Callaway had the tidiest round, notching up three birdies and just the one bogey at the 14th for his 70. Woodman made four birdies, but an uncharacteristic double bogey on the 15th left him sharing the winners’ podium.
Wallis made five birdies but combined them with three dropped shots for his card of 70, while Gane had the most up and down round with no less than six birdies mixed with four bogeys for his share of the pot.
Home pro James Winstanley kept the Burhill name in lights when he brought home the Burhill Tigers as the winners of the team event. They won on a count back after ending up in a tie on -15** with David Osborn (West Hill) and his Cranleigh team.
After the main event and a BBQ on the terrace, there was yet more golfing entertainment: a Nearest The Pin competition in which each PGA Professional was allowed one attempt from the 18th tee to the 18th green. Once more it was that man Gane who hit the winning shot to snatch the £5,000 cash bonus.
