Five time Virgin Atlantic PGA South Order of Merit winner Richard Wallis (Canterbury) warmed up nicely for the BMW PGA Championship, winning the Hayling Pro-Am by two strokes.
His three-under-par 68 was enough to take home the £1,100 winner’s cheque on a tough day for scoring. Wallis said: “Hayling was great condition, but the strong breeze made things more interesting, especially down the homeward stretch. The two dropped shots at the seventh and the 17th were untidy, but five birdies left me with a good enough score at the end of the day.”
Sharing second spot were Hayling’s Head PGA Professional, Mark Treleaven, and Left Handed Golf at Silvermere’s Chris Gane with cards of 70. Gane also made five birdies and with three holes left was catching Wallis, but dropped shots at the 16th and 17th pushed him out of contention. Treleaven’s birdie up the 18th tied him with Gane for the runners’ up cheques of £800 each.
In the team event, Hever Castle’s Elliott Owens inspired his amateurs to victory in the team event, finishing a point ahead of David Osborn’s group from West Hill.
