Howarth Has That Little Bit Extra

Jamie Howarth won the Cheshire & North Wales Open at Northop Country Park after eclipsing Royal Liverpool's Michael Jones who bunkered his approach to the first extra hole to lose by a shot.

"We played from the 10th and I hit my approach to 20 feet and I got up and down for a par," said Davenport's Howarth who has one year left to complete his final year of PGA qualification.

"I played solidly and picked up a couple of bogeys in my two-under-par 70."

He added: "I finished in the top five in the region's Order of Merit last season when I also got through to the second stage of Tour School."

Meanwhile, Jones was buoyed by an eagle three at the 15th but gave shot back at the next hole.

Leading scores:

  • 70 Jamie Howarth (Davenport)
  • Michael Jones (Royal Liverpool)
  • 71 Jason Shufflebotham (Denbigh)
  • 72 Graham Cox (Lymm)
  • 73 Benjamin Thompson (Hazel Grove), Garry Houston (Carden Park), Brian Cassidy (Vale Royal Abbey).
