Wright on! Rigby putts on the style

Andrew Rigby chanced his arm at working in a golf shop, banking and catering before deciding to embark on a professional golfing career.

At the age of 30, he's about to enter his third and final year of PGA training at Rudding Park Academy.

"I decided to take this route just in case I didn't make it as a player so I could teach instead," he said.

But after winning the Druh Belts & Buckles PGA North Assistants' Challenge for the Sue Wright Trophy at Helsby, he has two titles in the bag already this season so he's well on the way to achieving his goal.

"I won a PGA Yorkshire assistants' event at Howley Hall earlier in the year so I'm pleased with my progress so far," he added.

"But I still dream about pegging it up with the big boys on the European Tour and emulating my heroes."

Rigby posted a one-under-par 70 to prevail by a shot. Key to his victory was his short game.

"I holed out well after just going back to using my old Ping putter. I felt I couldn't miss with it," he said. "But I also recovered from some wayward shots."

His card revealed three birdies and a pair of bogeys as he edged out Dunham Forest's Michael Lane and Jonathan Dye, from Rockliffe Hall, who tied second.

Next fixture in the series is at the PGA in England and Wales (North) Bolton headquarters on August 8.
