Darren’s day as he cashes in at Hull

16 Jul 17

Darren Leng rolled back the years when he won the 36-hole PGA North £19,500 Renewable Energy Pro-am at Hull Golf Club.

The Rotherham-born former European player kept his mistakes to a minimum over two testing days as he returned cards of 70 and 68 for a two-under-par total to finish a shot ahead of overnight leader James Wilkinson.

“I chipped and putted well and had back-to-back birdies at the start of the turn in the first round and went one better with three in a row at the same stage the next day,” said Leng, 43, who dropped only four strokes all told as he picked up £5,000.

He added: “I quit the game when I was appointed director of golf at Driffield club Far Grange 13 years ago but I’m hoping to play a bit more this season.”

Penrith’s Wilkinson, who opened with a 67 in the first round. leaked four shots in three holes from the 15th in the next for a 72 but a birdie on the last helped him to stay one ahead of Birchwood’s Phil Archer, Abergele’s Stuart Runcie and Blackpool-based Phillip Kelly.
