Richard Law capitalised on local knowledge when he won the first in a series of regional assistant fixtures which teed off at Huddersfield Golf Club.
“I work just down the road from the course so that was a big help,” said the Bradley Park assistant who revealed who had only previously played two events.
Law, who won by two shots from Barnsley’s Matthew Wright and was three ahead of Lancastrian Sean Towndrow, made a dream start when he birdied the opening hole.
“I rolled in a lovely putt from 15 feet down a hill. My swing felt good but it was mostly due to the flat stick,” said the former Euro Pro professional who was four-under par after the first seven holes.
“The conditions were tough but the greens were perfect. I had a couple of bogeys in the middle of the round and finished in a blaze of glory with a trio of birdies and an eagle on the last.”
Law, 29, added: “I have decided to take the PGA route and I’m in my second year preparing to take my exams. I’m hoping to do well in the northern events then hopefully that will open a few doors.”
LEADING SCORES: 67 Richard Law (Bradley Park); 69 Matthew Wright (Woodlands DR); 70 Sean Towndrow (Southport & Ainsdale); 71 Oliver Adamson (Ganton), Matthew Kay (Ashton-under-Lyne); 72 Gareth Traynor (Wetherby); Glen Mowat (Royal Liverpool).
