Broadway’s Russ Berry continued his top form in the latest Gloucester and Somerset PGA medal at The Kendleshire to stretch his lead in the Total Triumph Order of Merit by finishing joint second.
After a quiet summer the Cheltenham-based pro has posted a succession of high finishes in five events in the winter series. His one-under-par 70 was matched by the steady George Ryall (Burnham & Berrow).
Although they were the only pros to break par they were overshadowed by Somerset county amateur Johnny Grace from Saltford who eased to a three-stroke victory with four-under 67. Another well supported day with a field of 36 played the course at its full length off the back tees.
Grace started slowly in the final group but signed in after making five birdies and seven pars over the final 12 holes.
Ryall invariably performs well at the course and another solid showing with three birdies and only two bogeys also earned him the Over 40’s award.
Berry made five birdies but a mid-round blip when he dropped three shots in two holes around the turn was costly. He now leads Giuseppe Licata (Chipping Sodbury) by more than 20 points in the OOM.
Mark Plummer (Cirencester) and former Kendleshire club pro Paul Barrington (InPlay Golf) shot 71 to share fourth. Plummer, making his second appearance of the season, showed he has not lost his touch and also claimed the birdie sweep. Licata and Luke Derrick (Henbury) shared sixth on 72.
