Jon Bevan enjoyed a perfect rehearsal for his participation in the forthcoming English PGA Championship at Bowood Golf and Country Club by winning its annual pro-am.
The PGA pro from Sherborne Golf Club put himself on track to claim his first victory of the season and £675 winner’s cheque with a birdie at the par-five first.
Thereafter, and by comparison with his closest challengers, birdies were in short supply.
Having reached the turn in level par and trailing Ivybridge Golf Club’s Paul Hendriksen by two shots, he recorded two more birdies for a two-under-par round of 70.
The round featured one bogey – at the par-four fifth – and therein lay the secret of his success.
Chippenham Golf Club’s Louis Bolton, Giuseppe Licata of Filton Golf Club and Hendriksen who finished tied second a shot behind Bevan on one-under, undermined their challenges with bogeys.
Bolton recorded five birdies while Hendriksen and Licata posted four each but ruined the good work with bogeys.
By contrast, Wessex Golf Centre’s Michael Watson, who completed the quartet sharing second place, enjoyed less of a roller-coaster round – posting three birdies and two bogeys.
