The Taunton & Pickeridge Pro-Am resulted in a closely fought contest that saw two strokes span a third of the field and three of the competitors squeezed into the winner’s enclosure.

Wessex Golf Centre’s Michael Watson (above), Luke Derrick of Henbury Golf Club, and Barry Austin of Downes Crediton Golf Club were the only members in the 41-strong field to break par and finished tied first thanks to one-under-par rounds of 68.

Each one collected £778 for their efforts which, in two cases, were the result of consistency in negotiating the 6,100-plus yards Somerset course.

Derrick dropped two shots but made amends with three birdies. Watson, meanwhile, atoned for a bogey at the first and double bogey at the par-four seventh with birdies at the fifth and ninth and an eagle at the par-five 13th.

Austin, by contrast, experienced more of a rollercoaster round, ending up in credit by erasing four bogeys with five birdies.

At the halfway stage, however, the trio and the rest of the field trailed Katie Rule (above) and Ross Langdon who had posted one-under-par scores of 34 for the front nine.

Mendip Spring’s Rule went on to finish in the seven-strong group tied eighth on one-over while Langdon of Brickhampton Court Golf Complex was two shots further back.

The team competition, meanwhile, was won by Somerset County Sports. The quartet, comprising amateurs James Brice, Jon Webster, Nick Dean and Morlais Castle PGA Professional Sion Bebb, posted a two-ball better-ball score of 116.
