The prize presentation ceremony following the Carlyon Bay Pro-Am proved a case of three’s company after Kevin Harper, Daniel Toogood and David Dixon (above) all posted four-under-par rounds of 68 to finish tied first.
All, however, had good cause to ponder what might have been after each collected a cheque for £650 as opposed to one for £850 that would have been gone to an outright winner.
East Devon Golf Club’s Harper, for example, posted four birdies on the back nine after two bogeys left him level par at the turn.
And Toogood, who is attached to Weston Super Mare Golf Club and was two-under at the halfway stage, also posted four birdies on the way home but ruined his chance of being the sole occupant of the winner’s enclosure with two bogeys.
Meanwhile Dixon, who represents Enmore Park Golf Club, had to recover from an inauspicious start that saw him bogey the second and third holes.
A birdie at the par-five fourth repaired some of the damage before a bogey at the par-four 12th bookended by a birdies at the 10th and 11th and a quartet of them from 13 to 16 earned him a share of the spoils.
Similarly, a trio comprising Wessex Golf Centre’s Michael Watson, Richard O’Hanlon of St Kew Golf Club, and Oake Manor Golf Club’s Matthew Turner finished tied fourth following three-under-par rounds of 69.
Meanwhile, the team competition contested by 30 trios of amateurs each captained by a PGA pro was won by Cornwall Bathroom Centre with a two-ball better-ball score of 18-under.
