Watson out on his own

17 Jul 19

Michael Watson Cumberwell

Michael Watson maintained his run of good form and enjoyed the perfect dress rehearsal for the second Order of Merit tournament of the season by winning the Cumberwell Players Champs Pro-Am.

The pro from Wessex Golf Centre had finished tied first in two of his last three events but this time finished well clear of the field in claiming the £350 winner’s cheque.

A bogey-free seven-under-par round of 64 left him three shots ahead of Clevedon Golf Club’s Ashley Mansell and four clear of a quartet tied for third place: Toby Hunt, David Dixon, Craig Melding and Steve Surry.

Mansell also finished second in the team competition that involved a PGA Professional playing alongside three amateurs.

It turned out to be  distant second, however, as the winning team of Henbury Golf Club comprising PGA pro Luke Derrick and amateurs Dave Glew, Bill Powell and Marco Stefanini amassed 97 points to win by eight.
