David Dixon delivered an encouraging display in advance of his participation in the BMW PGA Championship next week by winning the Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club Pro-Am.
The Enmore Park pro qualified for the European Tour’s flagship tournament at Wentworth as a result of winning the 2018 PGA Play-Offs in Turkey.
That victory also secured his berth in the Great Britain and Ireland PGA Cup team that will take on the USA in Texas later this month and his seven-under-par round of 65 bodes well for both engagements.
Bogey-free and featuring five birdies and an eagle at the par-five seventh, it earned the former European Tour member £795 and pipped John Bickerton and Barry Austin for victory.
Bickerton, a former European Tour member who is head PGA Professional at the host club, and Downes Crediton Golf Club’s Austin, finished a shot behind Dixon on six-under-par.
Austin matched Dixon on the front nine but his challenge on the way home, which featured an eagle at the par-four 15th, was derailed by two bogeys.
Bickerton was also left to rue two bogeys on the back nine after being level with Dixon on five-under after 11 holes.
However, he gained a measure of consolation in leading a trio of amateurs – Nigel Gardner, Andrew Shepherd and Daryl Gardner – to victory in the team event with a score of 93 Stableford points.
