Ioan Jones turned the PGA North region’s qualifier for the Birdietime-sponsored PGA Assistants’ Championship into the perfect dress rehearsal for the final.
The final of the tournament, which numbers golfing legends Tony Jacklin and Peter Alliss as former winners, will be held at Pleasington Golf Club in Lancashire, the venue where Jones qualified for the showpiece event.
And he did so in fine style, posting a four-under-par round of 67 to finish a shot clear of the 70-strong field.
The highlight of his round was an eagle at the par-four sixth hole, which more than made amends for a bogey at the par-four second.
Suitably inspired, Jones, who is attached to Abersoch Golf Club where his father, Alan, is the head PGA Professional, followed up with birdies at seven and nine to reach the turn in three-under.
Two more birdies, diluted by a bogey at 11, followed on the back nine to ensure Jones repelled the trio tied for second place: Daniel Croft, Southport and Ainsdale Golf Club’s Sean Towndrow, and Graham Roberts of Eaton Golf Club.
They, too, have qualified for the final that carries a £32,000 prize fund with £5,000 going to the winner.
And they will be joined by 18 others from the qualifier, including Durham City Golf Club’s Jack Trewhitt who claimed the last place by winning a four-way play-off.
