Rockliffe Hall Golf Club pairing Martyn Stubbings and Jonathan Stacey sealed their second qualifying win in as many years to reach the PGA Fourball Championship final.

The Darlington-based duo won the Scottish qualification event held at Musselburgh Golf Club near Edinburgh.

They carded a seven under par round of 64 to beat another English combination in Richard Robson-Crosby (Ponteland Golf Club) and Andrew Scrimshaw (Close House Golf Club).

The Scotland-based pairing of Graeme Brown (Montrose Golf Links Ltd) and Gareth Wright (West Linton Golf Club) were a further shot back in third place.

They will join Craig Dempster and Andrew Locke (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) at the £33,000,  BMW supported Fourball Championship final which takes place at Whittlebury Park in Northamptonshire between August 16-18.

And Rockcliffe Director of Golf Stacey admitted it was time he and head professional Stubbings did better.

“We won our qualifier last year but when we got to the final at Carden Park, we missed the cut,” he explained.

“But we chose to compete in the Scottish event this year as clashed with a pro-am event.

“It meant a two hour drive but it was a good day and we liked the course. It was excellent and the first time we’d played it.”

Their place in the final was never in danger after they recorded four birdies on the front nine.

“It’s all very well qualifying for the final we have to do better when we get there,” added Stacey who would like to see his club Rockcliffe Hall host the final one day.

“The course here is awesome and we are at a five red star facility, there’s only us and Gleneagles with that title.

“We like to go out and win events to promote the club and raise its profile where possible.”
