Wolverhampton-born golf pros and long-time friends Adam White (above) and Gary Gilligan have qualified for the Golfbreaks.com PGA Fourball final for the second year in succession by winning the competition’s regional qualifier at the Staffordshire Golf Club.
The pair used to play together as amateurs at South Staffs Golf Club and have remained friends ever since despite their jobs being more than 100 miles apart.
White, 28, has been a PGA Professional at Perton Park Golf Club, Wolverhampton, for 11 years and Gilligan, 32, is the head PGA pro at Sweetwoods Park Golf Club in Kent.
“Gary moved there six or seven years ago but we’ve kept in touch,” said White.
“I’ve played in the PGA Fourball Championship several times but last year I teamed up with Gary.
“The partnership worked pretty well and we finished tied 16th. Obviously we’re looking to improve on that this year. We got plenty of birdies in the qualifier – let’s hope they keep coming in the final.”
Their nine-under-par round of 62 in the PGA Midland regional qualifier featured eight birdies and an eagle and left them a shot clear of two pairs who also played in last year’s final – Dean Hibbert and William Painter and Adam Keogh and Michael Reed.
The former finished tied 18th a shot behind White and Gilligan while Keogh and Reed, having lost in a play-off to Jack Winer and James Watts, will not have to do much to improve on last year’s performance to claim the £5,500 first prize.
This year’s final, which carries a £33,250 prize purse, will be staged at Farleigh Golf Club, Surrey, in late August and nine pairs qualified for it at the Staffordshire Golf Club.
They are: A White (Perton Park) & G Gilligan (Sweetwoods Park), A Keogh (Spalding Golf Club) & Michael Reed (Glen Gorse Golf Club), D Hibbert (East Midlands Golf Academy) & W Painter (Morley Hayes Golf), G Brown & O Adamson (both Ganton Golf Club), M Campbell (Kettering Golf Club) & S Lilly (De Vere Staverton Estate), L Cardy (Kenwick Park Golf Club) & J Howard (JCB Golf & Country Club), I Gregory (Charnwood Golf Centre) & P Bagshaw (Newark Golf Club), H Quirk & M Fieldsend (both Drayton Park Golf Club), A Smart (Horsley Lodge Golf Club) & E Rockley (Chesterfield Golf Club).
