West country duo Michael Weston and Richard O’Hanlon had to venture outside their region to qualify for this year’s final of the Golfbreak.com PGA Fourball Championship and attempt to end a sequence of near misses in the competition.
The pair, who finished tied second and tied third in 2017 and 2018 respectively, booked their place in this year’s final at Farleigh Golf Club, Surrey, in the last regional qualifier.
That was also in Surrey, at Leatherhead Golf Club, more than 200 miles from O’Hanlon’s base at St Kew Golf Club in Cornwall.
“Neither of us was available to play in our PGA West regional qualifier and this was our last chance,” explained Watson (top), who is attached to Wessex Golf Centre, Weymouth.
“We’ve done well in this competition in the past and we were keen to play in this year’s final. So we’re delighted we’ve qualified – it’s made our long journey worthwhile.”
Watson and O’Hanlon posted an eight-under-par betterball score of 63 to finish tied seventh with five other pairs.
It also left them three shots adrift of the two pairs that shared pole position, Reigate Heath Golf Club’s Clifford Gough and Charlie Jones and American Golf’s Jamie Debrou and Alex Vezey of the David Leadbetter Golf Academy.
Both posted 11-under-par scores of 60 with the Reigate Heath duo recording eagles at each of the three par-five holes.
This year’s final, which carries a £33,250 prize purse, will be staged in late August and 13 pairs qualified for it at Leatherhead Golf Club.
They are: C Gough & C Jones (Reigate Heath), J Debrou (American Golf) & A Vezey (David Leadbetter Golf Academy), B Talbot & L Cooper (Tilgate Forest Golf Centre), J Ford & H Carne (Robert Rock Golf Academy), B Williams & A Brown (Dulwich & Sydenham Hill Golf Club), C Bowler (Sonning Golf Club) & G Woodman (ProAgenda), J Ingram & T Cowley (Royal Ashdown Forest Golf Club), B Light & A Kirk (Guildford Golf Club), P Newman (East Berkshire Golf Club) & T Newton (Frilford Heath Golf Club), P Nessling (Cooden Beach Golf Club) & P Appleyard (Sittingbourne Golf Centre), R O’Hanlon (St Kew Golf Club) & M Watson (Wessex Golf Centre), Z Morgan & R Boyns (Weald of Kent Golf Club), W Harmston (Sunningdale Heath Golf Club) and D Timms (Gravesend Golf Centre).
