The Palm Springs Desert Resorts of Southern California proved to be the perfect setting for the 25th California Classic where Tom Shadbolt and Paul Nessling shared first place in The Pro-Am Tour’s longest running event.
The popular pro-am attracted a strong field who were able to test their game over four of the desert’s best course, including three former PGA Tour venues. All of the courses were presented in magnificent condition, and with perfect sunny weather and temperatures in the high seventies, all was set for some low scoring.
Andy Raitt flew out of the blocks with a 65 in the first round of the tournament on the PGA West’s Nicklause course. The 2017 PGA Cup winner followed that up with a 67 to set the half-way lead at 12-under par, with Shadbolt sitting one shot back.
Shadbolt’s relentless scoring continued in round three as he shot 68, which was matched by Nessling who sat on six-under-par at the mid-way point. Raitt slipped back with a 74 and round of the day went to Guy Woodman with a 67.
Shadbolt held a five-shot lead heading into the final round at the Celebrity Course at Indian Wells and he again posted a round of 68 to finish on 19-under-par for the tournament. Raitt fell just short with a 65 to finish two shots behind, however Nessling produced the round of the tournament, scoring 63 to finish level with Shadbolt.
Woodman, with a fine performance of his own, led his team of Dave Roberts, Carolyn and Richard Beach to victory with a score of 67 under. Raitt's team secured second, ahead of Nessling's team in a very tight battle for top spot, with the lead having changed multiple times over the week.
