Richard Wallis reprised the form in the PGA Professional Championship qualifier at Royal Blackheath Golf Club that has resulted in him winning the PGA South region’s Order of Merit five times in nine years.
Wallis, who is attached to Canterbury Golf Club, posted a four-under-par round of 67 to win the PGA South regional qualifier and claim the £500 first prize.
More importantly, the victory has earned him a place in next month’s final of the Titleist and FootJoy-sponsored competition which, staged at Hunstanton, carries a £78,000 prize purse with £10,000 going to the winner.
Wallis laid the foundations for victory on the front nine with a quartet of birdies and no bogeys before completing the homeward half in regulation.
Ashley Dart from Foxhills Club and Resort was also four-under at the turn courtesy of an eagle at the par-five first and birdies at the sixth and ninth holes.
And he looked the likely winner after birdies at 11 and 13 took him to six-under and two shots clear of the field.
However, successive bogeys at 14, 15 and 16 derailed his challenge and he had to settle for second place after finishing a shot behind Wallis on three-under.
The pair will be joined at Hunstanton by 11 other qualifiers, a band that includes Matthew Andrews of Highwoods Golf Club and Lingfield Park’s Gary Gilligan.
Andrews, who finished tied seventh on level par, got his round off to a memorable start with an albatross at the par-five first; and Gilligan claimed the last qualifying berth as a result of winning a sudden death play-off with ProAgenda.com’s Guy Woodman on the second extra hole.
The other qualifiers are: Thomas Muchmore (Kingsnorth Golf Club & Driving Range), Matt Rice (Purley Downs Golf Club), Elliott Evans (Hever Castle), Nico Els (Professional Golf Tuition Brea), Richard Tinworth (Tinworth Ltd), Michael Lowe (Leatherhead Golf Club), Paul Jones (Ashley Wood), Joseph Pepperell (Oxford Golf Club), and Craig Sutherland (Poult Wood Golf Centre).
