The eagles have landed

Horsley Lodge Winners WebDerbyshire duo Kevin Lock and Bob Revie booked their place in the Staysure Trophy final thanks to a birdie-laden back nine that resulted in a seemingly improbable victory.

Lock, the head PGA Professional at Horsley Lodge Golf Club, Derbyshire, and his amateur partner, looked well out of contention halfway through the competition’s PGA South West regional qualifier at Cumberwell Park Golf Club, Wiltshire.

They were six points adrift of St Mellons Golf Club’s Toby Hunt and Steve McDonald and five behind three other pairs in the Stableford format better-ball competition that, sponsored by Staysure, the insurance specialists for over 50s, features a PGA pro playing in tandem with a senior golfer.

“We only had 18 points,” recalled Revie, a 65-year-old retired IT training manager who plays off 20.

“We thought we’d done OK and Kevin jokingly said on the 10th that we needed a birdie on every hole.”

Which, in scoring terms, is what they achieved courtesy of three birdies and as many eagles, the last one recorded by Revie on the par-four 18th that, worth four points, put them level with seven other pairs on 45.

Crucially, it took their points tally for the back nine to 27 and earned them victory on countback.

“In fairness, we weren’t aware coming up the 18th that we were in with a chance,” Revie continued.

“I had a shot on the hole, hit a decent drive and was on the back of the green in two. I had a 35-foot putt from there and it went in for a nett eagle. Kevin was speechless! I was speechless! And the other guys in our fourball didn’t know what to say!”

The eagle was Revie’s second on the back nine but he was not alone in enjoying a purple patch.

Lock, who weighed in with an eagle at the par-five 11th, said: “I was six-under for the back nine – we couldn’t do anything wrong. I reckon if we’d driven the ball into the trees it would have bounced back into the middle of the fairway. It was unbelievable.

“I don’t think Bob can believe it now. He’s over the moon and his eyes lit up when he was told that, as well as playing in the final, he would also play with the Staysure Tour pros for two rounds of the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship that follows our tournament.”

The 36-hole Staysure Trophy final carries a £30,000 prize fund with £7,500 going to the winner and, by way of complementing the pair’s unexpected qualification for it, they were not due to play at Cumberwell Park.

“We should have played in a qualifier at Enville a week ago but an administrative mix up meant we had to play here instead,” explained Revie.

“Given what’s happened it’s been well worth the journey – definitely all’s well that ends well!”

Leading scores: Horsley Lodge Golf Club*, Brean Golf Club, Cardiff Golf Club, Downes Crediton Golf Club, Marlborough Golf Club, Morlais Castle Golf Club, Salisbury & South Wilts Golf Club, and St Mellons Golf Club (45 points). *won on countback on points amassed over back nine.
