Archer hits the bull’s eye in Blackpool

The last thing on Phil Archer’s mind in recent times was winning another gong after he claimed the James Brierley Lancashire Open title.

Archer, a 2017 PGA Cup winner and three-time runner-up on the European Tour, sprung a surprise on himself when he racked up eight birdies to win the Order of Merit event at Blackpool North Shore.

“I still play but it’s not as serious as competing on the tour,” said Archer. “I don’t want to be jumping on planes these days, that’s for sure. I prefer to keep my feet on the ground.

“I’m heading towards 50 so I expect I’ll take the game more seriously when I’m battling with the older generations.”

Runner-up was first round leader Tim Dykes who posted seven-under-par, having led by eight shots in the first round.

On the same mark was Gareth Davies as regular winner Andrew Palmer proved a six hit as Gary Houston, Ryan O’Neil and David Shacklady completed the line-up.
