David Dixon is on course to win the PGA South West’s Order of Merit after the first round of the fourth and final event of the campaign – Get to the Point.

Dixon, who had been competing in the European Tour’s Scottish Championship at Fairmont St Andrews just three days beforehand, posted a one-under-par round of 71 to lie tied-third.

And with the race to win the Order of Merit effectively a three-cornered contest that also involves James Dick and Daniel Toogood, Dixon is firmly in control.

Dick, who represents Gloucester Golf Centre and trails Dixon by 91 points in the Order of Merit, negotiated the course at The Point at Polzeath in two-over to lie tied-12th.

Meanwhile, Weston Super Mare’s Toogood, already 136 points adrift of Dixon, faces the proverbial mountain to climb after just making the cut with a six-over-par round of 78.

Dixon, who represents Enmore Park Golf Club, is one a quintet sharing third place in the event sponsored by Marston’s Brewery and the venue, The Point at Polzeath.

It also comprises Barry Austin from Crediton Downes Golf Club, China Fleet Golf and Country Club’s James Ruth, the Putt Lab’s Joe Ferguson, and St Mellons Golf Club’s Toby Hunt who went into the event having just secured his Category PGA EuroPro Tour card.

They lie a shot adrift of joint-leaders Michael Watson of the Wessex Golf Centre and Max Golf Protein’s Scott Drummond.

Both enjoyed positive starts in pursuit of the winner’s cheque with birdies at the par-five first but were pegged back by bogeys at the uphill par-four 18th.
