Foursome achievement – quartet share first place at Cumberwell Park

14/05/2021

The winner’s podium at Cumberwell Park was somewhat overcrowded after the club staged two events in tandem – the Titleist & FootJoy Assistants & Under 30s Pros’ Sprint and the R&A PGA Trainees Development Series.

It was occupied by a quartet of players after Matt Moseley (above), James Dick, Ashley Mansell and Jacob Hunter posted four-under-par rounds of 68.

Moseley, who represents Tenby Golf Club, and Dick, his fellow PGA Trainee from Gloucester Golf Centre, were eligible to play in both events and had double cause for celebration.

Clevedon Golf Club’s Mansell and Hunter of Broadstone Golf Club, by contrast, were only eligible to play in the Turier Scales-supported Titleist & FootJoy Assistants & Under 30s Pros’ Sprint and shared that competition’s top spot with the two Trainees.

All four, however, had good reason to reflect on their contrasting fortunes at the last two holes.

Dick bogeyed the par-four 17th while Moseley recorded a birdie; and Hunter finished birdie, birdie while Mansell was left to rue a doble bogey at the par-four 18th.

Meanwhile, Ben Amor, the winner of the four previous events in the series which were run simultaneously, first at Cardiff and then at Crediton Downes Golf Clubs, finished a shot behind the leading quartet on three-under.

And that was enough to ensure the PGA Trainee from Marlborough Golf Club topped the Titleist and FootJoy Order of Merit Bonus Pool which had been supplemented by a generous contribution from Turier Scales.

Amor, a former Carris Trophy winner, earned £300 for heading the Order of Merit to take his winnings for the series past £1,500.

Reflecting on his round and overall success, he said: “It was a tough start – it was raining and windy when I played the first five holes.

“But the course was in good shape and, although I left a couple out there, I’m really pleased with my day’s work.

“Obviously I’m delighted to win the series and am looking to play in more events during the season – hopefully I can push on from here.”
