Home sweet home for Smart

Jessica Smart attributed excellent putting as a key factor in her domination of the latest PGA in Devon Winter Medal on Saunton Golf Club’s West Course, although local knowledge may also have played a part.

Smart, a year three PGA Assistant at the club, defied a strong wind blowing off the sea to record four birdies and post a two-under-par round of 69 to claim the £160 winner’s cheque.

That quartet of birdies represented the difference between her and Ivybridge Golf Club’s Paul Hendriksen and Will Farley of Torquay Golf Club who posted rounds of two-over to finish joint second.

Commenting on the condition of the course, The PGA in Devon’s Alistair Welsher said: “Despite the overnight rain, it was immaculate and the greens were easily the best we have played on all winter.”
