Savill grabs a grand in Portugal

27/01/2020

Louis Savill (Tandridge) enjoyed a week in the Portuguese sunshine, winning the 13th Invitational Sunshine Pro-Am

Based on the best four rounds at Quinta do Lago’s Laranjal and South courses, and the Dom Pedro Old Course, Savill finished with 155 points* (13-under-par). Collecting the £1,150 winner’s cheque, he edged his nearest rivals, James Ablett (Lee-on-the-Solent) and Michael Vandenberg (Rochford Hundred), into a tie for second spot by two strokes.

27 teams converged to play on some of the finest courses in Portugal, all thanks to the efforts of the duo who founded the event, PGA Head Professionals Chris Evans from Tandridge and Matthew Paget at Royal Mid Surrey.

As Savill put it: “This has become a ‘must play’ event, and it’s all down to Chris and Matt – well done yet again to them. To play on such courses in warm sunshine at this time of the year is fantastic, and it’s great to see so many more teams turning out again.”

In the team event, James Scade (Crondon Park) led his three amateurs to a resounding victory with a final tally of 351 points, four ahead of Lewis Bird’s team from Royal Mid Surrey, while Savill’s amateurs claimed third spot.

The 2020 tournament again comprised much more than a week’s golf in Portugal. Based at the award-winning 5-star Tivoli Marina Hotel, besides the practice and competition rounds, all the après golf was laid on as well - from cocktail parties and charity dinners to lunch on the beach and a team karaoke evening!

Chris Evans added: “Obviously Matt and I are delighted with the way the event has developed and we’re already working on the Pro-Am for 2021."
